When Accidents Happen, We’re Here for You

Accidents can happen for a variety of reasons, and even a seemingly minor issue could have serious consequences. If you’re experiencing an eye emergency, please contact us as soon as possible. We leave room in our schedules every day to accommodate emergency appointments should they happen and need our attention.

If our office is closed and you need immediate attention, please go to the emergency room or call 911.

Symptoms To Keep an Eye Out For

We are here to take care of your eye-related needs in any circumstance. There are a few symptoms that you should bring to our attention at your earliest convenience:

  • Sore, red, itchy, or burning eyes
  • Excess or discolored discharge
  • Sudden change in vision

Swollen eyelids

When to Call Your Optometrist

Though we may need to refer you to a specialist for treatment, you should contact your optometrist right away if you experience:

Chemical Injuries

If you work around or regularly handle chemicals, you run a higher risk of exposing your eyes to harmful substances or fumes. If you get chemicals in your eye, rinse it with cool, clean water immediately and flush for at least 15 minutes. After flushing, visit us or go to your nearest emergency room.

Foreign Objects in the Eye

If you get something in your eye, the experience can range from uncomfortable to extremely painful, depending on what it is. For small objects like dust or sand, you should be able to remove it on your own with excessive blinking, artificial tears, or flushing your eye with cool, clear water.

If you get something large stuck in your eye, do not try to remove it yourself. Try not to move your eye and call 911.

The best things you can do to avoid eye emergencies include:

  • Washing your hands before touching your face and eyes.
  • Wearing protective eyewear when handling chemicals.
  • Protecting your face and eyes when around moving objects.

If you are experiencing an eye emergency, call us ASAP. If we aren’t open, or you cannot wait, call 911.
